“Senior Snowbirds

Flock to Florida”

Rhonda Pipkin

The colder weather always brings about many changes in our warm blooded bodies. We like the sun! Scientists have observed for years the migration of animals, birds, reptilian creatures, and even insects trying to guess what makes them head south. Some thought it was just the mating pattern and survival of the species. Well, senior RV'ers 55+ have it over the animal kingdom. They know why its time to head south when the winter weather starts coming in and it's not to insure survival of the species with the mating ritual. Heading south says “mango tango baby” lets start having fun in the sun!

This month a number of seniors will already be on the road or looking for a destination to park for a few weeks or a few months. Have you considered central Florida? While not surrounded by the Gulf or Atlantic, there are just as many beach fronts due to the overwhelming array of lakes in the region, one of which is the famous Lake Placid, caladium capitol of the world, and featured in the movie where actress Betty White kept feeding the “monstrous crocodiles.” Of course you won't find the “helicopter” size crocodiles in Lake Placid, but what you will find is championship bass fishing, fabulous boating adventures, and plenteous natural environment to enjoy. Other beautiful lakes in the county support coastal type beaches where one forgets about not being on the edge of Florida. Birders will enjoy watching the multitude of species which inhabit the area in the winter months.

The county is divided up into three distinct districts, Lake Placid, Avon Park (insert picture), and Sebring (. Each has its own unique personalities. Avon Park founded in 1886 and known as the “City of Charm” is home of the mile long mall. Within its walls are shops of antiques, boutiques, and various intriguing finds. A perfect place for the touring senior. Avon Park is home of approximately 20,000 residents. A community college provides winter entertainment in the form of South Florida Community College Senior Enrichment with Broadway Musicals, Ballet, and hosts entertainers into the area. Knowing that seniors frequent Highland county for the “snowbird” season, activities are scheduled for six months in advance on the chamber calendars of each community and accessible via www.highlandscvb.com .

Adelaide Shores RV Resort located just north of Avon Park is a reasonably priced RV park which provides daily rates as well as annual rates. All sites are 45'x65' or larger and concreted with patios. Either 30 or 50 amps available and must be specified when making arrangements. Reservations are required due to the influx of “snowbirds.” Contact Adelaide Shores RV Resort at www.adelaideshores.com or 1-800-848-1924 and speak with Debbie.

Sebring, Florida known for week long racing activities was developed in the early 1900's by George Sebring. He conceived the idea of a circular plan where the city's governmental and business was the core and the community would radiate out from the center. His vision, “all roads would lead to the center of Sebring.” Population to approximately 39,000 this community feels like hometown USA.

Highlands Hammock State Park is an integral part of Sebring. The facility is the pride of the area. A natural and oldest state park in Florida's system, it features daily and weekly guided ranger tours. Trees in this habitat are thought to be upward to over 1,000 years old. The nation's tallest Sable palm towers 90 feet over everything. Alligators, deer, raccoons, wild hogs, otter, and over 200 species of birds can be seen. Occasionally a bald eagle or Florida panther has been spotted. The Highlands Hammock State Park features an RV park with 138 sites, water, electric and dump site available. Sites accommodate 45' rigs only and may or may not be able to handle double slides. Reservations are required at least 11 months in advance. This RV Park is operated by the State Department of Environmental Protection. Rates are very reasonable. Contact them at www.myflorida.com or call 1-863-386-6094.

Tanglewood RV Resort located at 3000 Parkway, Sebring Florida is a higher end RV park still within the pocketbook of most who own RV's. Again the rates are for daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, or at this resort FOREVER! Yes, sites can be rented or purchased and the “snowbird” can officially become a Florida resident. Seniors will enjoy access to fourteen nearby golf courses, the closest one being at Sun ‘N Lake Country Club, RV'ers staying at Tanglewood can enjoy a special discount package and drive their cart to the first tee. Besides golf, there is tennis for those elbow rubbing enthusiasts! Anglers will appreciate casting for bass, using pole and line while bank fishing or drift boats and trolling for crappie or catfish. The waters abound with black bass, chain pickerel, bream, speckled perch, red finned pike, bluegill, sunshine bass, and large-mouth bass. Further information can be obtained at Tanglewood's website: www.tanglerv.com .

Well, snowbird, where will you flock to? You've got such a wide range of choices, and many activities to keep you busy all winter long. If you get bored, you could, I guess revert back to the age old activity of cuddling up together. Sometimes that's just as much fun! Happy Traveling.
